Linear thinking caused Titanic to “sink”

1 min readApr 28, 2025

Non linear thinking saved Apollo-13 crew.

Builders of titanic ship assumed advanced technology and “safety features” was enough to ensure safety in all circumstances.

Linear focuses on simple cause-and-effect relationships and assumes that problems have direct, predictable solutions.

But when NASA’s Apollo-13 mission faced “catastrophic” failure,
Had an oxygen tank “explode”
Engineers didn’t follow a manual.

↳ They grabbed whatever was available on the spacecraft — plastic bags, duct tape, cardboard — and invented a solution that had never existed. To combat the rising carbon dioxide levels.

In my playbook I call it “creative system” to solve, create and innovate.

Today’s business challenges are Apollo-13 moments:

Canva didn’t offer design tools:
empowered everyone to become a designer.

Shopify didn’t enable e-commerce:
made entrepreneurship accessible to all.

The old playbook of follwing linear steps is dead.

Modern problems require what I call “orbital thinking”

1. See the whole system
2. Connect unlikely dots
3. Prototype rapidly
4. Embrace chaos

In business, linear thinking cause you problems than benefits in the long run.

Your challenge isn’t a banana tree to “grow” in someone else’s environment.

How fun is it for you to scribble your thoughts?
