Adjust project phase, never worry about how to race
It doesn’t matter which project method you follow.
To hit the mark, you need a blueprint.
Whatever you’re going to do —
- Improve processes and operations
- Enhance products and services
- Create great customer experiences
- Drive transformation
- Build new ideas
You name it…You will start a project…
What you end up doing is planning strategy and choosing a project management method “trying” to deliver a successful project and outcomes.
But many things fall through — scope, requirements, misalignment on needs and priorities, and even figuring out what went wrong.
In every project, I follow these steps:
1. Practice understanding problem, needs, or challenge.
2. Identify high-level process where these issues reside.
3. Use understanding to define boundaries of the need.
4. Identify key actors in the process — people, tasks, etc.
5. Map each actor’s roles, tasks, and overall environment.
6. Generate ideas, design, validate it, feedback, iterate.
The results from this process will define your:
- Requirements, capabilities, and features.
- Key priorities and risks to avoid.
- How the solution works.
This informs your project with:
- A detailed project direction
- Roadmaps and timelines
- Budget, resources, and costs
The right strategy isn’t just about achieving outcomes but delivering them without “extra costs”
Projects are initiated to solve, not to cause additional problems.
P.S what’s your best project management method?
